July 2008 Update

We are delighted to announce the highly-anticipated relaunch of Grove Music Online, the cornerstone of Oxford's online music reference collection, Oxford Music Online. Over the past few years, Grove Music Online has undergone extensive technical work to improve functionality and to create a site that meets the highest possible accessibility standards. Equally important, however, are the numerous editorial changes that have been made in the process of continuing to shape and improve Grove Music Online. For additional information on these changes, which include a new article structure, additional content, improved search functionality, new partnerships, and more, please click here.

A note from the editor:

Following the launch of Oxford Music Online in March of this year, I am very pleased indeed to announce the resumption of regular content updates to Grove Music Online. The improvements to Grove Music Online involved extensive technical work, and although editorial work continued while the site was under technical development, it was not possible to publish our work on the site.

This update is therefore devoted to re-establishing Grove’s currency. We have made minor revisions to over 300 articles, including many which record the passing of members of the music community. Sadly, the past year has seen the passing of a number of significant figures, among them the two great tenors Giuseppe di Stefano and Luciano Pavarotti, the maverick composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and the distinguished musicologist and editor of The New Grove Dictionary of American Music, H. Wiley Hitchcock.

Improvements to Search and Browse
With this update we have also begun our improvments to the searching and browsing. Grove’s subject classification now includes a category for ‘operas’. In the advanced search, you can search terms in only the articles on operas. In browse, ticking this box will give you a list of all the articles on individual operas in Grove. I encourage all regular Grove Music Online users to read our Tips for Experienced Grove Users for further guidance on getting the most out of the new site.

Looking forward
Our October update will be devoted to contemporary music, with new articles on contemporary composers as well as major revisions to existing articles. Among these is a significant revision of our article on Karlheinz Stockhausen.

In March, 2009 we will have an update concentrating on opera and opera singers, new articles on both recent operas and on opera singers, and major revisions to existing operas.
